It was the weird discussion about whether or not to allow Turkey into the European Community that provoked me to find out more about the country. Istanbul, one of the few European mega cities, reveals a lot about what’s going on in Turkey today: the problems they are dealing with, the chances they have. Istanbul also lies right smack on the seam between Europe and Asia. One wanders in Istanbul between the old and the new, modern Turkey and Europe and Asia…back and forth. And since riding the ferry with workers from the Asian to the European side, it became clear to me that Istanbul is not comparable to any other city in this world.

At the end of March the new book "Istanbul" with an essay by renowned Turkish author Elif Safak will be published at Hatje-Cantz publishing-house.
